What are Racial Covenants?

Racial covenants, once widely used across the United States, have since become illegal. However, the remnants of this discriminatory practice can still be found in numerous property records today.

Imagine a neighborhood where a rule exists, explicitly stating that only individuals of a specific race or ethnicity are allowed to reside there. This rule is known as a racial covenant—a clear injustice, which prompted action by DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Recently, all 3 states passed a law, urging homeowners to eliminate their racial covenants. This legislation encourages homeowners to take steps to remove any such covenants attached to their houses or properties. Surprisingly, many homes in the DMV continue to bear the burden of racial covenants in their property records.

By promoting the removal of these discriminatory covenants, Maryland is striving for fairness and equality in housing, acknowledging the need to address the lingering effects of a regrettable past. Together, we can ensure that our communities remain inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
